Bryan Cockrell

What I Do: Pastor Bryan Cockrell is the founding pastor of The Sanctuary, which began in August, 2006. He is the main preaching and teaching pastor of the church. He serves as Director of the Pastor’s Advisory Board, works alongside the elders of the church, and oversees the ministry of the deacons, which is referred to as Servants of The Sanctuary.
Background: Bryan was born December 15, 1956, in Augusta, GA, at the old University Hospital. He was raised between Harrisburg and Frog Holler in the downtown area of Augusta. He attended school in Augusta and was working at University Hospital when he began full-time ministry as an evangelist in 1978. During this time, he ministered throughout the southeast singing in The Master’s Touch group and preaching. He was ordained as a minister on July 17, 1991, and served 25 years on the ministerial staff of an Augusta area church. He is a member of Christians United for Israel, the Gospel Music Association and The National Recording Academy (Grammy Foundation). He continues to receive education and training through various pastoral and ministerial schools. Interests: Bryan’s interests include Biblical study, traveling, historic churches, music, food and bull riding (as a spectator only!). Family: He has been married to Sharon since July 4, 1979, and is the father of two daughters and three grandchildren. |
Sharon Cockrell

What I do: Sharon is a Bible teacher and works in the church office in administration, congregational care and counseling. She’s a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and has a deep desire to see people walk in freedom and wholeness through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Her other areas of oversight include women’s ministries and grief support. She loves missions and has been blessed to participate in a number of medical and evangelical mission trips.
Background: Sharon was born in Rome, GA, but grew up in a small town outside Atlanta. She worked with both federal and state government agencies prior to her marriage to her husband, Bryan Cockrell, in 1979, when she moved to Augusta. She traveled with Bryan in evangelistic ministry for the first year of their marriage, after which they joined the staff of a local church to serve in youth ministry. They worked together in various areas of ministry at an Augusta area church for 25 years. In 2006, the Lord opened the door for The Sanctuary to begin. Interests: Her interests include reading, traveling and shopping…and a little chocolate ice cream every now and then! Family: She and her husband have two children and three grandchildren and make their home in Grovetown. |
Ricky Coule

What I do: Ricky oversees many of the administrative needs, education programs, Connections programs and occasionally fills in for Pastor Bryan. Even though he isn’t the Children’s Pastor any longer, Ricky stays heavily involved with the children’s programs.
Background: Ricky was born in Atlanta, GA and moved to Martinez when he was 7 years old. He graduated from Evans High School. After high school, and while working with inner city children in Augusta, Ricky went through the Church of God Ministerial Internship Program which he completed in 1988. In 1989 he began work as a full time Children’s Pastor, a position he would hold for the next 20 years. Ricky currently serves as the Spiritual Director for the CSRA Tres Dias Community. Interests: Ricky likes football, all technical gadgets, but mostly spending time with his family. Family: Ricky has been married to Cindy since 1988 and has four children, Carissa, Cameron, Andrew and Matthew. |
Cindy Coule

What I do: Cindy organizes children’s Sunday school, Awana, Summer Camp, Kinderchurch, Kidz Ministries and assists in other areas of children’s ministries. She enjoys being with children and seeing their enthusiasm. She especially loves their smiles and hugs.
Background: Cindy was born in Kansas and moved to North Augusta, SC when she was 10. She graduated from North Augusta High School and USC-Aiken with a degree in Elementary Education. She is certified to teach in Georgia and South Carolina and has taught high school, middle school and elementary school during her 11 years teaching. She helped develop and start a Christian elementary school and served as its director. She has served along side her husband in children’s ministries for more than 22 years and has also served as Children’s Director/Christian Education Director since 2001. Interests: Cindy’s interests include reading, watching great movies with a deep message, traveling anywhere, and going to yard sales with her children. Family: Cindy has been married to Ricky since July of 1988. They have four children, Carissa, Cameron, Andrew, and Matthew. |
Mike & Shirley Doolittle

What I do: Mike leads worship and directs the music program at The Sanctuary. Background: Mike was born in Augusta, Georgia where he has lived most of his life. After graduation from The Academy of Richmond County High School he married Shirley Miller of Martinez, GA and soon after, they moved to Franklin Springs, GA where they began working with troubled youth and indigent children. Later they would move to Falcon, NC and continue in ministry to youth. Mike has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. He taught school for five years, during which time he received his Master’s Degree and Education Specialist Degree in Education. Later he would move into administration and earn a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Mike now serves as a principle of an elementary school in Columbia County. During his career in education Mike has also served as a Minister of Music. He joined the staff at The Sanctuary when it was organized in 2006.
Interests: Mike’s hobbies include fishing, working in the yard, and spending time with his family. Family: Shirley is a vital part of the music program at The Sanctuary, serving as Choir Director. She has been married to Mike for 37 years. They have two children, Lisa and Brice, and two grandchildren, Ella and Jacob. |
Marc & Brooke Smith

What I do: Marc is responsible for leading the student ministry and missions departments. This includes preaching, teaching and discipling middle, high and college students as well as leading local and global missions efforts.
Background: Marc was born in Denver, CO in 1979 and grew up in the Denver suburb of Aurora. After graduating high school in 1998, he spent the next couple of years training with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and serving on mission teams around the world. After getting married in 2000, Marc received Biblical and pastoral training at Rocky Mountain Bible Institute. He and his wife, Brooke, moved to Augusta in 2001 and served in various roles of missions and youth ministry at an Augusta area church. They joined the staff of The Sanctuary in 2006. Interests: He loves all sports, focusing on Denver teams, especially The Denver Broncos. Marc loves to play golf and videos games, dream of Corvettes and drink Dr. Pepper. Any day spent on a beach with his family is a good day. Family: Marc has been married to Brooke since August 25, 2000. Brooke is very active in the youth ministry and also leads Mom’s Connection. Marc and Brooke have three amazing children, Hailey, Ava and Maddox. |
Sylvia Berry

What I do: Sylvia is the receptionist as well as church secretary. She is head of the Hospitality Team and leads the Helping Hands ministry. She also helps with the bulletin, works at the Hospitality desk on Sundays and Wednesdays, provides hospitality services for special guests and assists the staff and finance department as needed.
Background: Sylvia was born in Columbia, SC and moved to Augusta in 1968. She graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School in Leesville, SC in 1968. She has been employed as a secretary for a CPA office as well as a construction company. She was a customer service representative for GA Power Co. for 6 years. Interests: Sylvia’s interests include taking spur of the moment road trips with her husband and driving her 61 Caddy and Corvette. She also enjoys TV dramas and, of course, shopping. Her passion is helping people, especially older people, and listening to their experiences and life lessons. Family: She has been married to Carl since 1968. They have two children, Haley and Todd. four grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Adam, Hunter and Noah.

Anne Hatcher

What I do: Anne is the Financial Secretary of the church and serves as the coordinator of the Senior Adult ministry. She also serves on the Hospitality team and as secretary of the choir.
Background: Anne was born in Douglasville, GA and graduated from Richmond Academy in Augusta. She is also a graduate of Florida Junior College in Jacksonville with a Bachelor’s Degree in Data Processing. She was one of the founding members of The Sanctuary. Interests: Anne loves electronic equipment, making personalized cards, painting, and playing games on the computer. She enjoys interacting with people in the church, especially seniors. She used to love cooking until her husband retired at which time Anne retired from cooking. Family: Anne married Robert in 1962. They have two children, four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. |
Lynn Arnett

What I do: Lynn oversees building and grounds maintenance needs.
Background: Lynn was born in Clinton, NC and graduated from James Keanan High School in 1982. After graduation he joined the Army where he served for 6 years. Interests: Lynn loves fishing and NASCAR. Family: Lynn has been married to Karen since 1984. They have two children, Travis and Lindsey, and one grandchild. |
Marilyn Martin

What I do: Marilyn oversees the cleaning and custodial needs of the church.
Background: Marilyn was born and raised in Augusta, spending most of her childhood in the Harrisburg area. She graduated from Augusta Christian Academy. Interests: Marilyn loves NASCAR and shopping. Family: Marilyn Hill married Terry Martin in 1980. They have two children, Tiffany and Michel, and live in North Augusta, SC. |
Brent Carter

What I do: Brent manages all of the computer systems on the church campus and helps with multi-media ministries. He is also responsible for publishing CD’s and DVD’s of services and getting copies to shut-ins.
Background: Brent was born in Augusta and has lived here all his life. He grew up in a Christian family and was allowed the pleasure of attending Westminster Schools of Augusta for 14 years (pre-K- 12th grade). He graduated in 2007 and began to attend Augusta State University. He joined the staff of The Sanctuary in fall of 2008. He will be graduating in 2012 from Augusta State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, Management Information Systems. Interests: Brent loves working with computers and all things technical. Family: Brent is single. |
Kathy Hearn

What I do: Kathy is the manager of The Grove Bookstore. She also helps with hospitality services and miscellaneous needs of the church.
Background: Kathy earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Studies from Logos Bible College and has been very involved with church ministries ever since. She has taught Sunday school (12 years), and served as a youth director (15 years). Kathy served four years in management for Hallmark Stores and 13 years in management for Family Christian Stores. Interests: She loves helping and working with people. Her hobbies are reading and eating popcorn! Family: Kathy married Ray in 1974. They were married 35 years until Ray went home to be with the Lord in 2009. |
